Tour Itinerary
Begin your Ethiopia birdwatching safari by driving east from Addis Ababa toward Adama (Nazareth) and onward to the Sodere hot springs area, one of the classic lowland birding sites near the Rift Valley escarpment. The riverine woodland, scrub, and acacia habitats here are excellent for early birding and photography.
Continue toward the Awash / Asebot-Awash birding zone, where open savannah, rocky slopes, and thorn scrub offer exciting species diversity.

Today is dedicated to one of the Rift Valley’s most important birding sites: Abijata-Shalla National Park, a superb destination for waterbirds, flamingos, ostriches, raptors, and dry-country species.
Expected Birds
Likely species include Greater Flamingo, Lesser Flamingo (seasonal and water-level dependent), Great White Pelican, African Spoonbill, Sacred Ibis, Pied Avocet, Black-winged Stilt, Somali Ostrich, Kori Bustard, and various gulls, terns, and waders. Great White Pelicans and Somali Ostrich are well recorded from the Abijata area.

Possible sightings include Warthog, Golden Jackal, and small antelope in the drier sections of the park.
Overnight: Eja Resort / Lake Langano
After breakfast, drive to Lake Ziway with birding around the Hara Dembel / lakeshore wetlands. This is one of Ethiopia’s best accessible wetland birding sites and a wonderful place for close-range photography.

Possible species include African Fish Eagle, Black Crowned Crane, Great White Pelican, Marabou Stork, Hamerkop, Pied Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, African Jacana, Black Crake, herons, egrets, and papyrus-associated birds.
